Sun May 17th 2009

Join us for the Open House Event at the Furnace Firehouse.  We will be displaying the many artifacts in the lower level museum and will be celebrating the return of the original Furnace Firehouse Hose Cart (on loan to us form the Pioneer Hose Co.) and the Trains of Robesonia display featuring the photographs of renowned Robesonia photographer, George Gerhart III.  Please stop in and see the many improvements to our "headquarters".  These improvements have been made with monies obtained via grants from the Janssen Foundation and through the tireless dedication of our valuable volunteers.

Sun Dec 7th 2008

The Friends of the Furnace will be holding a special Christmas Sale and open house on Sunday, December 7th from noon to 4 PM at the Furnace Firehouse. If you weren’t able to attend the fall open house, here is your chance to see the newly remodeled basement which has increased our museum space. On display is a collection of photographs from the George W. Gerhart Collection called “The Trains of Robesonia and the Reading Railroad”. These pictures have been enlarged and donated to the Friends of the Furnace by Tom Gerhart, who is George’s nephew. The sale will include shirts, sweatshirts, collectibles, paintings and much more. Food will also be available.

Furnace Festival Update

Some changes are in store. Due to the fact that recent festivals have not been as financially successful as previous ones, we have decided to do something different both this year and next. This September, the Festival will once again be held the third Saturday in September, the 15th. In an attempt to make more of a profit, the festival will be a little more laid back and it will be held at the Furnace Firehouse. The reason for this is you don't have to park in the lot and walk to the Furnace Office. You park and walk 50 ft and you're there. It will also be easier for us to set up since most of our gear is either in the basement of the Firehouse or in the shed. Since we're getting older, easier is better. We will have historical displays on both floors and food and games will be in the rear on the lower level.

Next year, 2008 will be the twentieth anniversary of the Furnace Festival. The big changes for next year will be moving the festival from September to May and moving it downtown to the Robesonia Borough Pavilion.

We have done that for two reasons. First, there seems to be so much going on in September that moving it to the spring may allow more people to attend. Second, we feel that having it in town would allow more people to walk to the festival. Again,  having it at the pavilion will make things somewhat easier since the pavilion has a roof which means setting up fewer tents. They also have picnic tables which means renting less gear. While we don't have all our planning finished, we really want to make it special.

If everything works out, we may in fact have two events a year. The laid back festival with historic displays in the fall , and the bigger entertainment oriented event downtown.

 2006 Festival Notes:

Once again, Mother Nature threw us a curve with rain leading up to and the morning of the event.  The Friends persevered and the rain let up and the sun even made an appearance or two later in the day!  A great time was had as attendees enjoyed Jacob Schoeners Tavern and his educational stories of daily life in the 18th Century.  The Honky Tonk Heroes played traditional country music as people enjoyed the food and fun and of course the tours and artifacts on display in the Friends Museum-the Firehouse.

2005 Festival Notes:

A fun time had by all as Joe Keys entertained as well as the 76'ers.  Lester Breininger's Black Kettle Bean Soup was big hit as well as the Blue Jay cheese steaks!

2004 Festival Notes:

The days leading up to the weekend of Sept 18, 2004 were sure interesting!  The remnants of Hurricane Ivan caused massive rain and thus the Friends scrambled to put up huge outdoor tents as we hoped to go on "Rain or Shine"!  Well, Ivan sorta prevailed as we were forced to re-schedule the 2004 Furnace Festival to Sunday, Sept 19, 2004.  What a difference a day makes!  We were blessed with cooler temperatures and bright sunshine.  All in all, it was a great day as attendance only suffered marginally.  All who attended were treated to music by local oldies band Flamin' Dick and the Hot Rods, arts and crafts for children, and the other regular treats: great food, walking tours and a chance to view the archives on display in the Furnace Office.
